For this renovation of a historic Victorian building located in downtown Salt Lake City, we were challenged with converting what was once a small antiques store and apartment into a gracious, single-family home. Though the building had been well maintained, the interiors had been stripped during a 1970s renovation, which included come unfortunate metallic wallpapers, odd casework details, and little of the original charm. Working with the Owner, we re-programmed each level to create a four bedroom, three bathroom residence with the spaces necessary for family living. To respect the history of the home, we created a first floor where the kitchen, living room and dining room occupy distinct spaces, but are connected in a way that accommodates a modern lifestyle. The second floor hold three bedrooms, including a new master suite, and a large family space, while the third floor was converted in to a loft space that can act as an additional guest room or family area. Finally, during renovations, the Owner provided us with original images of the exterior of the home, which guided our design of a new front porch and balcony.
