Green Street Addition and ADU

Residential, In Progress

In order to maximize the available footprint of a desired ADU, the owner of this property chose to first add to the footprint of their existing home. This increases their ability to construct a spacious accessory dwelling unit (ADU) while also improving the use of space within their home. The addition to the home is expressed as an unassuming sunroom pavilion which connects to the main house by means of a generous breezeway. These spaces serve as a new entertaining and dining area, and a simple entry space with storage elements. The interior spaces open onto a covered deck, which in turn opens onto a grill patio and the rear yard. A limited size and simple material palette keep the addition in harmony with the existing home and also set up the home to share similar components with the ADU.

With the addition completed, the accessory dwelling could be maximized to create a generous and well-functioning rental unit. The entry area of the ADU faces and mimics the main home’s sunroom addition, creating a dialogue of materials and organization between the two buildings. Strategically placed windows create visual corridors to maximize the feeling of space inside the ADU while also maintaining privacy from the main home and an adjacent alley.
